What is the Clark Fork Watershed?
The Clark Fork River and its tributaries drain most of western Montana. The upper river and headwaters were heavily impacted by wastes from over a century of mining. Today, the area is the largest Superfund environmental clean-up site in the nation.

The Milltown Dam is scheduled to be breached this coming Friday, March 28, 2008 beginning around 11:30 am. If you wish to observe the breach, the Milltown bluff overlooking the Dam and the confluence of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers offers an excellent view of the entire site and the area and the dam breach. We encourage you to watch from the bluff -- directions attached below. Another good option is to watch the breach via the Milltown web cam by logging onto: www.clarkfork.org or www.envirocon.com.

EPA Milltown Site Update (pdf)
Things are moving fast at the Milltown Dam! Yesterday the bypass channel outlet was opened and it is now filled. Friday, the plan is to open the bypass channel inlet and divert the Clark Fork River into the bypass channel. Next Friday, the plan is to breach the Milltown Dam. PLEASE BE CAREFUL: On Friday, March 28, when the dam is breached, the Clark Fork River level will rise slightly --- and rapidly. The highest rise (up to 4 feet) will be immediately below the Milltown Dam. The levels will be lower downstream and only up to 1-1 1/2 feet in Missoula. At the Bitterroot River, we only expect to see a rise of about 6" (at most). The river level will return to normal after a few hours. Following the breach, there may be additional --- and potentially dangerous --- debris in the river. Warning signs will be posted at access points and the river patrolled to help ensure everyone's safety. For these reasons, EPA ASKS THAT EVERYONE STAY OFF THE RIVER ON FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2008.

EPA Milltown Site Update (pdf)
Expect traffic delays over Milltown bridge next week (3/17-3/24), MDT advises: The Montana Department of Transportation would like to inform motorists that the Highway 200 bridge located over the Blackfoot River in Milltown will be closed for a short time during the next week. MDT will provide 24-hours notice prior to the closure. The closure is expected to last up to 30 minutes. MDT will be removing the center pier of the old bridge. For safety reason, the new bridge will be closed to traffic while removal activities commence. Scheduling of the removal is dependent on weather and other construction activities.MDT is committed to expediting this project and apologizes for any inconveniences this work may cause. For the latest construction and weather reports, please dial 511 or visit www.mdt511.com. For more information:
