What is the Clark Fork Watershed?
The Clark Fork River and its tributaries drain most of western Montana. The upper river and headwaters were heavily impacted by wastes from over a century of mining. Today, the area is the largest Superfund environmental clean-up site in the nation.

NCAT Announces Butte’s 2007 SustainabilityFEST

Butte, MT– July 9, 2007 –The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) will host its 2nd annual Sustainability Festival on Saturday, August 18, at the NCAT headquarters in Butte, Montana.
The festival was created to help residents of southwest Montana learn about ways to live more sustainably, through conserving energy and recycling, for example. The event includes feature presentations by area experts, who will speak about global warming and its effect on Montana’s wildlife, renewable energy and energy efficiency on the farm and at home, local food production, low-water landscaping, growing crops for energy, and much more.
The SustainabilityFEST also will feature demonstrations of sustainable technologies, such as composting and rainwater harvesting. Montana businesses selling sustainable products and local foods will be on hand. Music and a variety of kids’ educational and fun activities are scheduled throughout the day.
The first annual event—held in 2006 in celebration of NCAT’s 30th anniversary—was very well attended, with hundreds of people visiting throughout the day. “The tremendous success of the first festival made us realize that there is a huge interest within our community to learn more about sustainability,” said Kathy Hadley, NCAT Executive Director. “Providing people and organizations with the tools they need to make sustainable choices helps us carry out our mission. It also helps strengthen the growing number of people around the world taking action to protect the environment and conserve resources,” she added.
The festival is free and open to the public. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at NCAT’s headquarters building at 3040 Continental Drive in Butte. NCAT encourages Montana businesses producing sustainable products and local food producers to register for booth space and exhibit their locally produced products.
